Some people use them to stay in touch during their very busy lives. To call parents everyday on the way home from work. To reassure themselves that they are buying the right kind of applesauce from the grocery store or allergy medication from the drug store. To make plans for the next weekend or simply to become part of the new social web our age has invented.

and yeah- I use it for all of those reasons, too.

but, when someone needs you in the middle of the night at a time when no deep hue of purple in the sky can even hint that the day is near, at a time when it would be absolutely ridiculous to call someone's house phone, and at a time when they need you most,

that is what cell phones are for.
